A Prayer for Strength and Wisdom
Beautiful expression of victory over evil.
वसुदेवसुतं देवं कंसचाणूरमर्दनम्।
देवकी परमानन्दं कृष्णं वंदे जगद्गुरुम्।।
Vasudevasutam Devam Kaṁsacāṇūramardanam
Devakī Paramānandaṁ Kṛṣṇaṁ Vande Jagadgurum
I bow to Lord Krishna, the son of Vasudeva, the divine being who destroyed the evil Kaṁsa and Cāṇūra, who brings supreme joy to His mother Devaki, and who is the teacher of the entire universe.
🕉️ Let us understand the meaning of the shlok
Vasudevasutam: Refers to Krishna as the son of Vasudeva. This emphasizes His divine birth and role as a savior of dharma (righteousness).
Devam: Signifies Krishna as a divine being or God, full of compassion, wisdom, and power.
Kaṁsacāṇūramardanam: The words "Kaṁsa" and "Cāṇūra" refer to two significant demons whom Krishna vanquished. "Mardana" means destroyer or crusher, highlighting His role as the protector of dharma by eliminating evil forces.
Devakī Paramānandam: Indicates that Krishna is the source of supreme bliss and joy to His mother, Devaki, who endured great suffering and imprisonment before His divine intervention.
Kṛṣṇam: Refers to the beloved, playful, and compassionate deity, Krishna, who embodies divine love and wisdom.
Vande Jagadgurum: Means "I bow to the teacher of the universe." Krishna, through His teachings in the Bhagavad Gita and His life, provides guidance to all beings, teaching the path of righteousness, devotion, and wisdom.
This shlok beautifully encapsulates Krishna's divine mission: to protect the good, destroy evil, and impart wisdom to the world. By addressing Him as Jagadguru (the teacher of the universe), it highlights His role as a spiritual guide for humanity, transcending time and space.
