O Tulasi, beloved companion of Lakshmi, the auspicious one who removes sins
and bestows merit,
Salutations to you, praised by Narada, and dear to Lord Narayana.

Let us understand the meaning of the shlok

  • Tulasī: Tulasi, or the holy basil, is considered sacred and is worshipped as a divine plant that brings prosperity and spiritual merit.

  • Śrī-sakhī: This means "companion of Shri" (Goddess Lakshmi). Tulasi is closely associated with Lakshmi, symbolizing prosperity, purity, and auspiciousness.

  • Śubhe: Śubha means "auspicious" or "good." Tulasi is considered a harbinger of good fortune and positive energy in homes and temples.

  • Pāpahāriṇi: Pāpa means sin, and hāriṇi means "remover." This phrase highlights Tulasi’s role in purifying the mind and spirit, helping devotees overcome sins and negative tendencies.

  • Puṇyade: Puṇya means merit or virtue, and de means "giver." Tulasi is believed to bestow spiritual merit, leading devotees closer to liberation and divine grace.

  • Namaste Nārada-nute: This line acknowledges the praise that Tulasi receives from the sage Narada, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, reflecting her revered status in Vaishnava tradition.

  • Namo Nārāyaṇa-priye: Priye means beloved, and Nārāyaṇa refers to Lord Vishnu. This phrase signifies Tulasi’s close relationship with Vishnu, making her worship particularly significant for devotees seeking His blessings.

This shlok is a beautiful invocation of Tulasi’s divine qualities, recognizing her as an embodiment of purity, virtue, and auspiciousness, and invoking her blessings for spiritual growth and prosperity.
