The ultimate Guru, who teaches through silence
This shlok reminds us of the importance of inner wisdom and the need for a guide to navigate life’s complexities.
गुरवे सर्व लोकानां भिषजे भवरोगिणाम्।
निधये सर्व विद्याना श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये नमः॥
Gurave sarva lokānām Bhiṣaje bhava-rogiṇām
Nidhaye sarva vidyānām Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrtaye namah
Salutations to Shri Dakshinamurthy, the Guru of all the worlds,
The healer of the disease of worldly existence,
The repository of all knowledge,
And the embodiment of wisdom in the form of Shri Dakshinamurthy.
🕉️ Let us understand the meaning of the shlok
Gurave: Refers to the Guru, who is a guide, teacher, and dispeller of darkness (ignorance).
Sarva Lokānām: Indicates that Shri Dakshinamurthy is not just a Guru to individuals but to all the worlds and beings.
Bhiṣaje: Means the healer or doctor. Here, it metaphorically refers to a spiritual guide who cures the suffering caused by ignorance.
Bhava Rogiṇām: Refers to those afflicted by the "disease" of worldly existence, including attachments, desires, and the cycle of birth and death.
Nidhaye Sarva Vidyānām: Depicts Shri Dakshinamurthy as the treasure-house of all knowledge—spiritual and worldly.
Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrtaye Namaḥ: Concludes with reverence to Shri Dakshinamurthy, who embodies supreme wisdom and imparts it in silence.
This shlok is found in the Dakshinamurthy Stotram composed by Adi Shankaracharya. It venerates Shri Dakshinamurthy as the ultimate Guru, who teaches through silence and intuitive wisdom.
