Wisdom in Acting Without Delay

This shlok reminds us of the unpredictability of life and the importance of taking timely action.

न ही कश्चित् विजानाति किं कस्य श्वो भविष्यति।
अतः श्वः करणीयानि कुर्यादद्यैव बुद्धिमान्॥

Na hi kaścit vijānāti kiṁ kasya śvo bhaviṣyati।
Ataḥ śvaḥ karaṇīyāni kuryād-adyaiva buddhimān॥

No one knows what tomorrow holds for whom. Therefore, a wise person completes tomorrow's tasks today itself.

🕉️ Let us understand the meaning of the shlok

  • न ही कश्चित् विजानाति (Na hi kaścit vijānāti): No one can predict the future; the phrase highlights human ignorance about the events of tomorrow.

  • किं कस्य श्वो भविष्यति (Kiṁ kasya śvo bhaviṣyati): What will happen and to whom in the future remains uncertain.

  • अतः श्वः करणीयानि (Ataḥ śvaḥ karaṇīyāni): Hence, tasks meant for tomorrow...

  • कुर्यादद्यैव (Kuryād-adyaiva): Should be done today itself. The word "adyaiva" emphasizes immediacy.

  • बुद्धिमान् (Buddhimān): A wise or prudent person acts without delay.

The shlok is a call to action, urging us to value the present moment and avoid procrastination.

  1. The Impermanence of Life: This shlok teaches us to acknowledge the fleeting nature of life and the unpredictability of circumstances.

  2. Value of the Present Moment: It emphasizes that the present is the only certainty and must be utilized wisely.

  3. Avoiding Procrastination: By postponing important tasks, we risk losing opportunities or being caught unprepared for unforeseen events.

This timeless teaching encourages mindfulness and proactive living, ensuring we make the most of our time.
