Overcome ignorance and obstacles in the pursuit of knowledge.
This shlok invokes Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom, learning, and arts.
पद्मपत्र विशालाक्षि पद्मकेसरवर्णिनी।
नित्यं पद्मालया देवी सा मां पातु सरस्वती॥
Padmapatra-viśālākṣi padma-kesara-varṇinī।
Nityaṁ padmālayā devī sā māṁ pātu Sarasvatī॥
O Saraswati, with large eyes like lotus petals and adorned with the hue of lotus pollen,
The ever-resplendent goddess seated on the lotus—may she always protect me.
Let us understand the meaning of the shlok
Padmapatra-viśālākṣi: Padma-patra means "lotus petal," and viśālākṣi means "wide-eyed." Saraswati’s large eyes, like lotus petals, symbolize clarity of vision, insight, and wisdom that pierces through ignorance.
Padma-kesara-varṇinī: Padma refers to the lotus, and kesara means the pollen of the lotus flower. This phrase highlights Saraswati’s divine radiance, comparing her complexion to the golden hue of lotus pollen, symbolizing purity, creativity, and beauty.
Nityaṁ Padmālayā Devī: Nityaṁ means "eternal" or "forever," and Padmālayā refers to "one who resides on a lotus." Saraswati is depicted seated on a lotus, which represents purity and detachment. The lotus remains unsoiled by the water, symbolizing a life untouched by worldly distractions.
Sā Māṁ Pātu Sarasvatī: Pātu means "may she protect," and this line is a plea to Goddess Saraswati for her constant protection and blessings in the devotee’s life.
This shlok invokes Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom, learning, and arts. It emphasizes her qualities of purity, clarity, and creativity, seeking her protection and guidance to overcome ignorance and obstacles in the pursuit of knowledge.

Good to know…
The earliest mention of Saraswati appears in the Rigveda, where she is celebrated as "Best of mothers, the best of rivers, best of goddesses" (Rigveda 2.41.16). While today we know her primarily as the goddess of knowledge and arts, her original association was with a mighty river. In fact, in the Rigveda, she is described as a powerful flood "who roars like a bull and cannot be controlled." This connection between flowing water and flowing knowledge is beautifully preserved in her name itself - 'Sarasvati' is derived from 'saras' (pooling water) and 'vati' (she who possesses), making her literally "she who has ponds, lakes, and pooling water
