Samudra Vasane Devi Shlok

Acknowledge the deeper connection with the Mother Earth.

समुद्रवसने देवि पर्वतस्तनमण्डले।
विष्णुपत्नि नमस्तुभ्यं पादस्पर्शं क्षमस्वमे॥

Samudra-vasane devi parvata-stana-maṇḍale।
Viṣṇu-patni namastubhyam pāda-sparśam kṣamasva me॥

O Goddess, who is clothed by the ocean and whose breasts are the mountains, O consort of Lord Vishnu, I bow to you. Please forgive me for touching you with my feet.

Let us understand the meaning of the shlok

  • Samudra-vasane: Samudra means "ocean" and vasane means "clothed." This beautiful phrase describes Mother Earth as being "clothed" by the oceans, symbolizing her vastness and nurturing nature.

  • Parvata-stana-maṇḍale: Here, Earth is poetically described as having mountains as her breasts, highlighting her nurturing, life-giving qualities. The mountains represent her ability to provide for all living beings.

  • Viṣṇu-patni: Earth is referred to as the consort of Lord Vishnu, the protector of the universe, emphasizing the intimate connection between Earth and divine sustenance.

  • Pāda-sparśam kṣamasva: This phrase is a humble plea for forgiveness, as touching the Earth with one's feet can be seen as an act of disrespect. The shlok reminds us to treat the Earth with reverence and gratitude.

This shlok is traditionally recited upon waking, right before placing your feet on the ground. It fosters a sense of humility and respect towards Mother Earth, acknowledging her as a divine being who sustains all life.

Three easy ways to integrate this shlok in your daily lives

  • Morning Ritual: Before getting out of bed, softly recite this shlok and touch the ground with respect. It’s a wonderful way to start the day with gratitude for Mother Earth, who supports and nourishes us.

  • Practical Application: This practice can cultivate a greater awareness of how we treat the environment. Throughout the day, let this shlok inspire mindful actions, such as reducing waste, respecting nature, and showing compassion to all living beings.

  • Action Step: Consider placing a small mat or a sacred cloth near your bed to step on each morning. This small gesture can serve as a daily reminder to honor Mother Earth with every step you take.

Good to know…

In Hinduism, the Earth is not just a planet but is personified as a goddess named Bhumi Devi, the divine consort of Lord Vishnu. Ancient scriptures teach us that she embodies patience and forgiveness. Interestingly, many believe that earthquakes occur when Bhumi Devi expresses her discomfort or displeasure due to human actions that harm the planet, such as environmental destruction. Reciting this shlok daily can help you stay grounded in the practice of protecting and nurturing the environment, just as she nurtures us.

Take a moment to reflect…

How would your relationship with nature change if you saw the Earth as a divine being rather than just a resource?
