Gurur Bramha Shlok

Guru is an embodiment of Bramha, Vishnu and Mahesh.

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।
गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः॥

Gurur Brahmā Gurur Viṣṇuḥ Gurur Devo Maheśvaraḥ।
Guruḥ sākṣāt parabrahma tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ॥

The Guru is Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer). The Guru is verily the Supreme Absolute (Parabrahman). I offer my salutations to that revered Guru.

Let us understand the meaning of the shlok

  • Gurur Brahmā: The Guru is equated with Brahma, the creator. This signifies that the Guru plays the role of creation in the disciple's life, helping to awaken knowledge and wisdom, much like Brahma created the universe.

  • Gurur Viṣṇuḥ: The Guru is also likened to Vishnu, the preserver, symbolizing the Guru's role in sustaining and nurturing the spiritual growth of the disciple, preserving righteousness and harmony.

  • Gurur Devo Maheśvaraḥ: This line compares the Guru to Lord Shiva, the destroyer. Here, it implies that the Guru destroys ignorance and ego, helping the disciple transcend worldly attachments.

  • Guruḥ Sākṣāt Parabrahma: The Guru is regarded as the very embodiment of Parabrahman, the supreme reality or ultimate truth. This acknowledges the Guru as the direct manifestation of the divine, beyond any specific form, guiding the disciple toward self-realization.

  • Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ: This is a humble salutation to the Guru, expressing deep reverence and gratitude for the Guru’s divine guidance and role in leading the disciple toward liberation and spiritual enlightenment.

This shlok beautifully expresses the reverence for the Guru, recognizing the Guru as a living embodiment of the divine trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—who guides, nurtures, and enlightens the disciple.

Three easy ways to integrate this shlok in your daily lives

  • Morning or Evening Prayer: Recite this shlok daily during your prayers or meditation to express gratitude to your Guru or spiritual guide. It helps to build a deeper connection with their teachings and seek their blessings for your spiritual journey.

  • Before Learning or Study: Whether you are a student, teacher, or seeker of wisdom, this shlok is a perfect invocation before any learning process. Chanting it helps open your mind and heart to receiving knowledge and understanding with humility.

  • Action Step: If you have a Guru or mentor in your life, take a moment to reflect on their teachings and how they have shaped your personal or spiritual growth. You can also write down your thoughts as a form of gratitude.

Good to know…

The word "Guru" itself means one who dispels darkness (gu meaning darkness and ru meaning remover). It is believed that without the guidance of a Guru, one cannot fully comprehend the scriptures or achieve spiritual liberation. Even Lord Krishna, in the Bhagavad Gita, emphasizes the importance of surrendering to a Guru to attain true wisdom.

Take a moment to reflect…

How has the presence of a Guru or mentor in your life helped you overcome challenges or deepen your understanding of yourself and the world?
